Red Berry Press Launches New Literary Journal

FERNIE – Red Berry Press announced today the launch of a new literary journal for Western Canada, the Red Berry Review.

“Red Berry Press was formed in 2008 to provide a creative outlet for the written word and to connect writers with readers in a tactile, intellectual and emotional form,” says publisher Randal Macnair. The Red Berry Review is the inaugural publication of Red Berry Press with the first issue slated for release May 15th, 2009.

Macnair and two colleagues, writer and editor Keith Liggett and writer Nic Milligan, recognized the need for a new outlet to strengthen the voices from landscapes of the West. “The environment we inhabit inspires us to create.” said Macnair, “At Red Berry Press we see an opportunity to share the voices of this inspiration with Canada and the world.”

The Red Berry Review is a biannual literary journal focused on the West – from the sage brush covered foothills rising out of the prairies to the cobbled beaches stacked with drifted logs on the Pacific coasts of the Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island. We seek writing about people, places and events in all genres – poetry, fiction and non-fiction that will stand the test of time.

As a Canadian journal, the Red Berry Review primarily publishes Canadian authors, but we encourage and publish work fostering a cross-border writing community. In our submissions we look for authentic writing with a distinct voice. Writing that speaks to the people, the communities and the landscapes of the region – Western Canada and the Northwest United States.

In recent years, there has been significant growth in the literary community in the Kootenays. Publications like Kootenay Carnival and events such as the Fernie Writers Conference demonstrate the strength of the written word emerging in the Rocky Mountains. “Red Berry Press and the Red Berry Review will build on these strengths and provide an opportunity for writers throughout the West to express themselves and share their diverse talents,” says Liggett.

Submissions are being accepted for the Spring Issue of the Red Berry Review until March 31st, 2009. The submissions window for the Fall 2009 Issue is July 15th through August 31st, 2009.

Please find attached a pdf version of this release as well as the 2009 Call for Submissions for the Red Berry Review. For further information on Red Berry Press and the Red Berry Review please visit our website at www.redberrypress.ca.

JUST A REMINDER TO APPLY FOR THE UPCOMING 2009 COLUMBIA VALLEY ARTS COUNCIL SEASON.

Seems to be very early to start thinking about the 2009 Gallery Season at Pynelogs Cultural Centre, and whether you would be interested in applying to have an Art Show…but in our attempt to plan and market our next season, we have many steps to take before our Gallery opening in April 2009.

So please consider the following 2009 Art Show options, and if you are interested in applying, please find the attached documents:

1. 2009 Juried Gallery Shows – solo Art Show sharing Gallery space with up to 6 other artists
· From May to Oct ‘09

2. 2009 Columbia Valley Tour of the Arts – second annual fundraising Tour of the Arts
· August 2, 2009

When you consider applying for either or both Art Shows, please be sure to read and understand the Guidelines on Page 5 & 6. There are responsibilities from both the artist and the management of the Gallery that are necessary to ensure the Art Shows at Pynelogs are professional, reflect the talent of our artists, and continue to show the dedication of the Columbia Valley Arts Council to the Columbia Valley .

The deadline for both Call-to-Artists is DECEMBER 15TH, 2009. The Selection Committee will meet shortly after, and the Gallery Show Calendar dates will be complete by mid January. If chosen, this should leave the artist enough time to work on their 2009 Artist Solo Show.

For those artists that do not, at this time, want to apply for a Solo Show, there are opportunities to apply for a couple of themed shows (i.e.: Wings Over the Rockies Art Show and the Annual Pynelogs Show) that are not juried, and require only up to 3 pieces of art for submission. This is the chance to display and sell your art, without the pressure of a jury selection and producing a large body of work. Pynelogs Gallery is a safe, enjoyable and friendly Gallery for all artists.
